Oud vs Western Fragrances: What's the Difference?

Shoppers in Dubai choose between two great traditions: Arabic perfumery, built around oud and attar, and Western (French-style) perfumery. Neither is better, they are different experiences. Here is how to tell them apart and pick what suits you.

What is oud?

Oud (agarwood) is a resinous wood prized in Arabic perfumery for its deep, smoky, animalic richness. Oud fragrances tend to be intense, long lasting and luxurious, a hallmark of Middle Eastern scent culture. Attar refers to concentrated, often oil-based perfumes in the same tradition.

How Western fragrances differ

Western or French-style perfumes are usually alcohol-based sprays structured as a pyramid of top, heart and base notes. They often feel brighter and more transparent, citrus, florals, aquatics and clean musks, and are designed to evolve on the skin over time.

How to choose

Want presence, warmth and a statement trail? Choose oud, amber and musk. Prefer something lighter, fresher or office-friendly? A citrus, floral or clean-musk composition will suit you better. Zam Zam offers both traditions, so you can build a wardrobe that covers every mood and occasion.
